Monocytes mature tom acrophages in the presence of the lineage determining cytokine M-CSF. They can be further polarized into M1 or M2 macrophages with distinct functional properties. We used microarrays to detail the global programme of gene expression underlying macrophage maturation and polarization and identified distinct classes of up-regulated genes during this process.
